Landa, Abikhaled Race in Steeplechase at West Prelims

Landa places 21st with sub-9 minute performance
COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The Rice Owls men's track & field team was represented at the NCAA West Prelims for a third and final day on Saturday with distance runners Hociel Landa and Andrew Abikhaled competing in the 3000m steeplechase.
The race was originally scheduled for Friday evening but was postponed due to lighting and severe weather.
Landa led the way with a 21st place finish by recording his second-best time (8:59.06) of the season and his second consecutive sub-nine minute performance. Landa placed seventh in his heat and finished strong with a final lap of 1:10.21. Abikhaled, who earned Third Team All-Conference honors at the C-USA Championships, was 12th in the opening heat and 33rd overall as he finished in a time of 9:10.29.
Junior James McNaney already punched his ticket to the NCAA Championships in the javelin with a sixth place finish (66.90m) on Wednesday and will keep the men's season alive by competing in Eugene, Oregon on Wednesday, June 9 at 8:15 p.m. (CT).
