
Abikhaled, Fong Selected to C-USA All-Academic Team

DALLAS - Rice senior distance runner Andrew Abikhaled and junior decathlete Corbett Fong were each named to the 2021 Conference USA All-Academic Team, the league announced on Wednesday.
Abikhaled, from Austin, Texas, had a 3.80 GPA in neuroscience with minors in global health technologies, biochemistry & cell biology and business. The senior is a four-time CUSA Academic Honor Roll recipient, a one-time Rice University President's Honor Roll member, a one-time Rice University Scholar-Athlete and Rice University Honor Athlete. This past season he won the 3000m steeplechase twice and earned C-USA all-conference honors by running on the DMR team that placed second at the C-USA Indoor Championships. At last week's C-USA Outdoor Championships, Abikhaled set a PB time of 8:52.20 in the 3000m steeplechase to earn third place and all-conference honors.
Fong, from Tomball, Texas, penned a 3.96 GPA in mechanical engineering. The junior was a Rice University Scholar Athlete and Rice University Scholar-Athlete of the Year. He earned the C-USA Academic Medal three times and made the C-USA Academic Honor Roll three times. He was also the Arthur Ashe Jr Sports Scholar Qualifier twice and a Rice University President's Honor Roll member four times. He finished second in the decathlon at the UTSA Invitational by racking up 6780 points for a new personal best and placed sixth in the heptathlon (3938 pts) at the C-USA Indoor Championships. This past week, Fong established a personal best mark with 7115 points in the decathlon at the C-USA Outdoor Championships to place fourth overall.
The C-USA All-Academic Team is comprised of 11 male track and field athletes with a minimum grade point average of 3.2 and at least a sophomore class standing.
