Hicks, Abikhaled Earn All-Conference Honors

Six Owls score points at C-USA Outdoor Championships
MURFREESBORO, TN - The Rice Owls men's track & field team posted a pair of all-conference performances and had six athletes earn team points on day three of the Conference USA Outdoor Championships on Saturday.
As a team Rice will enter competition on Sunday in second place with 53 team points, trailing Charlotte (60 points).
Sophomore thrower Nick Hicks, who won the hammer throw on Friday, set a lifetime best mark in the discus on Saturday with a second place throw of 56.69m (186-0) on his third attempt and saw that mark hold up for all-conference honors. With the throw, Hicks moved up from 25th to 20th in the NCAA West region standings.
To conclude the evening, sophomore distance runner Andrew Abikhaled recorded a lifetime best finish of 8:52.20 to place third overall and earn his first career C-USA outdoor all-conference honors. In the process, Abikhaled moved up 14 spots in the NCAA West region rankings to 25th overall.
Four other Owls earned team points on Saturday, with Samuel Woodley claiming the top finish among them with a fourth place result in the discus with a distance of 55.25m (181-3) in his first C-USA Outdoor appearance. Junior distance runner Hociel Landa, the freshly minted Bob Quin Award winner, set a lifetime best mark in the steeplechase with a finish of 8:54.03 to place fifth overall and move up to 28th in the NCAA West region rankings.
The Owls also earned an additional four points in the high jump with freshman Ese Amata placing sixth (2.09m/6-10.25) and Bradley Rozner finishing eighth (2.04m/6-8.25).
Rice qualified three runners for Sunday's finals as Jason Bugg set a season-best time in the 800m (6th-1:53.05) while Alex Topini (6th-3:52.87) and Matthew Murray (8th-3:54.33) each advanced to the next day in the 1500m.
