MURFREESBORO, TN – The Rice Owls men's track & field placed a pair of hammer throwers on the medal stand to highlight day two of the Conference USA Championships Friday at Middle Tennessee's Dean A. Hayes Track and Soccer Stadium.
Sophomore Nick Hicks won his third career C-USA title (first Outdoor) with a winning heave of 62.40m (204-0) in the hammer throw. Hicks, who ranked 24th in the NCAA West region entering Friday, unleashed the winning throw on his very first attempt.
Hicks joined Duncan Dickerson (2015) as the only Owls in program history to win the hammer throw at a conference championship. The victory was Hicks' sixth this outdoor season.
Joining Hicks on the medal stand was freshman Shaun Kerry, who advanced to the finals with a throw of 60.33m (197-11) on his second attempt. The Driffield, East Yorkshire (England) native recorded his 10th top-three finish of the season while earning six points for the Owls.
The Owls also had four competitors in the decathlon, all of whom set personal bests in total points. Sophomore Corbett Fong led the way with a career-best 7115 points, good enough for fourth place and five team points. Fong won both the discus (42.64m) and javelin (58.76m) on Friday.
