Owls Face Rebels in WNIT Championship
The Owls will conclude their 2020-21 season in grand fashion on Sunday when they face the Ole Miss Rebels in the WNIT Championship, Rice's first-ever trip to the tournament's title game. Rice has reeled off four consecutive wins in the WNIT, winning by double-digits in each contest and by an average margin of 15 points a game. This will be the Owls second postseason championship appearance under head coach Tina Langley, having won the WBI title over UNC-Greensboro on Mar. 26, 2017.
About Ole Miss
The Rebels defeated Northern Iowa by a score of 60-50 on Friday evening in the WNIT semifinals and have won six of their last seven games overall. Ole Miss averages 70 points per game and is surrendering 62.4 points a contest while holding opponents to 38 percent shooting from the floor. Junior forward Shakira Austin leads the team in scoring (18.4 ppg) and rebounding (9.1 rpg).
Last Time Out
Lauren Schwartz (25 points) recorded her third consecutive game with 20 or more points and Katelyn Crosthwait added a career-high 20 points to help lead the Owls to an 85-75 victory over Delaware Friday afternoon in the semifinals of the WNIT. The Owls shot 54 percent from the field and made a season-high 22-of-28 (79 percent) at the free throw line. Rice never trailed in the contest and limited Delaware to 33 percent shooting from the floor. Schwartz made 7-of-12 shots from the field and was a perfect 10-of-10 at the free throw line while Crosthwait knocked down 6-of-12 shots from the field, 4-of-7 from beyond the arc, and was 4-of-4 at the free throw line. Junior point guard Jasmine Smith added 17 points and 10 rebounds for her third double-double of the season, all of which have come in the last five games.
Golden Era for Owls
Since Tina Langley's arrival to Rice, the Owls have done nothing but win. Rice's all-time leader in winning percentage (.672), Langley has led the Owls to three straight Conference USA titles. The Owls have played in the postseason in three of the last four seasons, which includes the NCAA Tournament (2019), WNIT (2021, 2018), and WBI (champions in 2017).
