Host 62nd Ralph O'Connor Rice Invitational this weekend
Houston: Adam Oscislawski picked up his fifth win in six spring decisions to put the finishing touches on 4-0 win for Rice over Texas A&M Corpus Christi at the George R. Brown Tennis Center on Tuesday.
Doubles: After waiting nearly five hours due to light mid-morning rain, the Owls (7-6) stormed to quick wins at the first two lines to improve to 10-3 in the opening point of the match. Jacob Eskeland and Mohamed Abdel-Aziz did not lose a game to stake the Owls to the early advantage while Conrad Russell and Sumit Sarkar followed with their sixth win in their last seven matches.
Singles: While the Owls jumped out to take five of six first sets in singles, four of the five were decided by just to games. Sumit Sarkar and Mohamed Abdel-Aziz picked up the pace in their second sets to post a pair of points and extend the lead to 3-0, setting the stage for Oscislawski to record his second clinch point of the spring.
Efe Ustundag: "Days like today are all about keeping your focus. At one point today we weren't sure if we were going to be able to play this match and we sent the guys back home. The concern always is if they will stay mentally sharp. Corpus was not going to be able to stay late and at one point, I kind of let my guard down a little in terms of being prepared for the match. I started thinking about if we could find a date to reschedule because our schedule is pretty tight right now. Our facilities team did an amazing job of getting things ready in what seemed like only 30 minutes and we called the guys back. They came out and took care of business in doubles. This team has maturity and the way they came out showed that. It was business from the first point on. With a big weekend ahead, this was exactly what we needed from this match. We'll need to play better to be successful this weekend, but for everything that came at them today, I'm proud of the guys for getting the win."
Up Next: The Owls host FAU and Texas Tech for the 62nd annual Ralph O'Connor Rice Invitational this weekend. Texas Tech is currently ranked 31st in the Oracle/ITA national poll while FAU has received votes for the top 50. Play begins on Friday at noon when the Owls take on the Red Raiders. FAU and Tech meet on Saturday at noon and the tournament concludes on Sunday with the matchup between a pair of Owls.
