Owls sweep doubleheader
Houston: The Rice men's tennis team completed a sweep of their double header on Saturday, holding off a strong challenge by Louisiana in singles to drop the Ragin Cajuns 4-0. Adam Oscislawski shook off a 6-0 loss in his opening set of singles to deliver the clinching point at the fifth line.
Doubles: Rice improved to 7-2 in doubles by picking up wins at the second and third lines. Jacob Eskeland and AJ Valenty clinched the point with their second win of the afternoon to improve to 5-2 on the season.
Singles: Sumit Sarkar expanded the Owls lead to 2-0 with a straight set win and Mohamed Abdel-Aziz extended is winning streak in singles to four matches with his second win of the day to push the margin to 3-0. Eskeland added the Owls third first set win, but the path to the clinching four point suddenly became in peril when he rolled his ankle in his second set while Louisiana took the first sets at the fourth, fifth and sixth lines. Wesley Barnett, Oscislawski and Trinity Grear rebounded to force third sets on each court, while Eskeland regained his momentum in his third set as was poised to clinch his third match of the season when Oscislawski closed the match.
Efe Ustundag: "In both matches, I thought we played great doubles to start the day off. It's always nice to get that first point. The seniors kind of led the way today, with both Sumit and Mo (Abdel Aziz) getting wins in both singles matches. That was great leadership, getting off the court as quickly as they did and not let their opponents stay in the matches. The second match was all about grit. We won three first sets and we lost three, but every first set we lost, we were up a break in the third. Sumit and Mo made it 3-0 and then Wes, Adam and Trinity battled back to make sure no points got on the board. And what can I say about Jac (Eskeland). He cruised through his first set playing really high level tennis. Then he rolls his ankle and loses the second set. He became an absolute Viking out there. He was up 5-4 and serving for his match 45 minutes after he couldn't put any weight on his foot. The guys who weren't playing we such a big force in getting Jac going and that fired everybody up. Adam has been training really well and been going in the right direction for some time now, but we've not been able to get on the courts for a couple weeks. I told the team after if there was ever a 4-0 win that was a 10-man effort, this was it… their connection with each other, the way supported each other. Today was a really, really good day in a lot more ways than just winning a match."
Up Next: The Owls 12-match homestand continues on March 6 when they host Abilene Christian at 11 a.m.
