Owls Win Ninth Straight with Victory Over Marshall

Schwartz scores 18 points in 64-48 victory
HUNTINGTON, WV – The Rice Owls women's basketball team used a strong defensive effort to win their ninth consecutive game with a 64-48 victory Saturday afternoon at Marshall.
The Owls (13-1, 9-0) led from start to finish after seizing control of the contest by scoring the game's first 10 points. Rice's defense held Marshall (5-8, 4-7) to just 15 first half points and 30 percent shooting for the game.
Rice sophomore wing Lauren Schwartz led all players with 18 points and six rebounds, making 7-of-14 shots from the floor including 4-of-7 from beyond the arc. Senior center Nancy Mulkey (14 points/3 blocks) and junior guard Haylee Swayze (10 points) also scored in double-figures.
The Owls outscored the Herd in second chance points (15-6), bench points (20-9) and points in the paint (14-10) and improved 10-0 this season when winning the rebounding battle with a 38-31 edge over Marshall.
Rice, who is receiving votes in both the AP Top-25 Poll and WBCA/USA Today Coaches Poll, remained in first place in the C-USA West standings while winning their 14th consecutive league contest dating back to last year.
Marshall (5-8, 4-7)) was led in scoring by Kristen Mayo (15 points) and Kennedi Colclough (10 points).
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
The Owls outscored the Herd 15-5 in the opening 10 minutes as their defense shined limiting Marshall to 2-of-16 shooting (12.5%) from the field. Offensively, Schwartz knocked down a pair of three-pointers in the period while Crosthwait also connected once from three-point territory.
Second Quarter
Rice won the period, 18-10, and took advantage of the charity stripe by making 6-of-7 attempts. Over the final six minutes of the quarter the Owls outscored the Herd 12-4 to take a 33-15 lead into halftime.
Third Quarter
Mulkey scored six points in the third quarter and the Owls entered the final quarter with a 15 point lead despite Marshall winning the period, 16-13.
Fourth Quarter
Schwartz helped put the game away with nine points on three made three-pointers in the final quarter, one which the Owls outscored the Herd 18-17. Swayze also contributed six points in the quarter and made one of Rice's seven three-pointers on the afternoon.
