Rice back in action next weekend vs. Louisiana Tech
HUNTINGTON, WV – The Rice Owls women's basketball team dropped their first game of the C-USA season with a 68-56 loss at Marshall Sunday afternoon.
The first place Owls (13-2, 9-1) lost their first game since their narrow 57-53 setback at current No. 5 Texas A&M back on Dec. 20, 2020. The loss snapped Rice's nine-game win streak overall and their 14-game win streak over Conference USA opponents.
Rice senior Nancy Mulkey led the Owls with 15 points and nine rebounds while sophomore wing Lauren Schwartz contributed 14 points and senior guard Sydne Wiggins added 12 points.
Marshall (6-8, 5-7) outscored the Owls 45-25 in the second half, including a 23-4 disparity in the final 10 minutes. Savannah Wheeler led all players with 25 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
The Owls closed the quarter on an 11-1 run over the final 4:32 to take a 17-14 lead at the end of the period. Mulkey scored seven points in the quarter while Destiny Jackson contributed four points off the bench.
Second Quarter
Rice carried their momentum over from the opening quarter by scoring the first eight points of the period to stretch their lead to 27-16 on a jumper by Mulkey. The Owls would outscore Marshall 14-9 in the quarter to take a 31-23 halftime advantage.
Third Quarter
Marshall outscored the Owls 22-21 in a high-scoring third period where both teams took turns at making a run.
Fourth Quarter
The Herd closed the game on an 18-0 run over the final 3:53 with most of their damage coming at the free throw line where they went 11-of-12.
Up Next
The Owls return home to host the Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters Feb. 26-27. Friday's game is set for 2 p.m. on CUSAtv while Saturday's tilt will be at 4 p.m. on ESPN+.
