Four Owls scored in double-figures, including a career-high 18 points from sophomore forward Ashlee Austin, who made 7-of-11 shots from the field and 4-of-5 at the free throw line in her first career start.
Sophomore guard Katelyn Crosthwait added 14 points in 20 minutes off the bench while redshirt freshman guard Maya Bokunewicz chipped in 13 points and six rebounds in 32 minutes in her first career start. Senior transfer Alexis Stover rounded out the Owls' scorers in double-digits with 11 points on 5-of-11 shooting.
Freshmen Malia Fisher (9 points/6 rebounds/2 blocks) and Trinity Gooden (9 points/4 rebounds/3 assists) filled up the box score in their debuts while sophomore guard Destiny Jackson led all players with six assists and five steals.
The Owls shot 52 percent from the field while limiting SEU to just a 26 percent clip and outscored the Hilltoppers 34-4 in points off turnovers. Rice did most of their damage close to the basket with a 44-16 edge in points in the paint and an 18-2 advantage in second chance opportunities.
Postgame Reaction - Head Coach Lindsay Edmonds
"It's good to get the first one under our belt. It's been a long preseason of competing against one another and practicing with really low numbers so it was nice to be able to go against somebody else. I thought overall we played with pretty good intensity. The first half we held them to 16 points so I think we started off really well defensively. Offensively we shared the basketball really well, we had 20 assists tonight on 33 made baskets. Overall, we're beginning to gel and it going to continue to happen as we go."
