Owls Open New Era Under Edmonds with a Win
The Owls recorded an 84-41 opening night victory over St. Edward's in the season opener, delivering first year head coach Lindsay Edmonds her first career win. The 43-point margin of victory was the most by the Owls in a season-opener since 1997 when the Owls defeated Texas Southern by a score of 115-35 on Nov. 14.
Louisiana Scouting Report
The Ragin' Cajuns began the season with a convincing 84-58 victory over Texas A&M-Kingsville on Tuesday. Louisiana was picked to finish second in the 2021-22 Sun Belt Preseason Coaches Poll. Senior forward Ty'Reona Doucet was named the Sun Belt Preseason Player of the Year after averaging a double-double in league play with 10.8 points and 8.7 boards per contest. On the year Doucet led the Sun Belt with a 52.4 (89-for-170) field goal shooting percentage.
About Edmonds
The Owls newest head coach comes from North Carolina State University, where she had eight successful seasons with the Wolfpack. Edmonds served as an assistant coach from 2013-18, adding Recruiting Coordinator duties in 2018, before being elevated to associate head coach prior to the start of the 2019-20 campaign. During her tenure in Raleigh, N.C., Edmonds and head coach Wes Moore led the Wolfpack to an overall record of 190-65, including an 89-39 mark in the ACC, along with five NCAA Tournament appearances and three NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 berths (2018, 2019, 2021).
First for a Few Owls
The Owls had four first-time starters on Tuesday with all making contributions. Sophomore forward Ashlee Austin established career-high in points (18), rebounds (6), assists (4), steals (2) and minutes (22) while redshirt freshman Maya Bokunewicz poured in 13 points in her debut. Senior transfer Alexis Stover contributed 11 points while freshman Malia Fisher added nine points in the first quarter alone.
A Little Thievery
Rice's 14 steals on Tuesday were the most by an Owls team since Nov. 27, 2019 vs. McNeese. Sophomore guard Destiny Jackson set a career-high with six steals against the Hilltoppers.
Defending Home Court
The Owls have won 20 of their last 21 games at Tudor Fieldhouse, and have gone a combined a 22-2 at home over the last two-plus seasons. Rice is 61-8 at home since the 2016-17 season.
Who Returns/Who was Lost
The Owls return one starter, Katelyn Crosthwait, and six letterwinners from last year's squad. Crosthwait averaged 8.2 points and 5.3 rebounds last season while leading the team with 43 made three-pointers. Rice also welcomes back junior guard Haylee Swayze, who averaged 6.7 points off the bench and shot 40 percent from three-point territory. Four of Rice's starters were lost in the transfer portal. In total, the Owls will be looking to replace 66 percent of their scoring, 60 percent of total minutes played, and 68 percent of their made field goals.
Owls Picked 8th in C-USA Preseason Poll
The Owls garnered 94 points in the C-USA Preseason Poll and were slotted eighth out of the 14 teams. Charlotte and Old Dominion were projected to finish first and second, respectively.
Defending WNIT Champions
Rice is coming off a season in which they went 23-4 (12-2) and won the program's first ever WNIT Championship. The Owls went 5-0 in the postseason, including a 71-58 victory over Ole Miss in the title game.
