FORT MYERS, Fla. — Fordham went on a 12-0 run midway through the second half to turn a six-point Rice lead into an 84-74 defeat in the final game of the Gulf Coast Showcase, Wednesday night from Hertz Arena.
The Story
After Fordham opened the game with a three, Cameron Sheffield answered with one of his own as Rice scored eight of the next 10 points. The Rams tied the game at eight, but a Max Fiedler three-point play sent Rice on an 8-2 run. After trading baskets, Carl Pierre drilled a three to give Rice its largest lead of the game, 21-13, with 11:47 to play. The teams battled back-and-forth over the next three minutes. But with the Owls holding a 28-21 lead, they went cold, missing eight of their next 10 shots over the next 6:40, allowing Fordham to go a 15-4 run to take a 36-32 lead. Mylyjael Poteat and Pierre each made a pair of free throws to tie the game, but a Fordham layup sent Rice into halftime trailing 38-36.
After the teams opened with a pair of threes, Rice scored eight of the next 11 points. Fordham scored four straight to take a 49-47 lead, but a jumper by Pierre followed by a Quincy Olivari three-pointer sent the Owls on an 11-3 run to take a 58-52 advantage with 8:53 to play. However, the Rams went on a 12-0 run over the next 3:21 to go ahead 64-58. Travis Evee then made one-of-two free throws and Pierre drilled a three to cut the deficit to two. After two Fordham free throws, Pierre made his sixth triple of the game to pull Rice within one, 66-65, with 3:57 to play. Antonio Daye, Jr., made back-to-back layups to push the lead to five. Pierre then made two free throws, but the Rams scored eight of the next 10 points to put the game away."
