Best team finish since 2010
TALLAHASSEE, FL – A young Rice Owls women's cross country team put the finishing touches on a storybook season by competing as a team for the seventh time in program history at the NCAA Cross Country Championships Saturday morning at the Apalachee Regional Park.
Rice placed 31st overall among the nation's best in a fast-paced 6k race with 811 points in a field of 255 runners.
"I'm extremely proud of these young ladies for getting here," Rice head coach Jim Bevan said. "From where we started back in September to what we accomplished is a priceless achievement and they'll take away these moments for the rest of their lives. This was a great learning experience and a lifetime experience. There's really no way to prepare for such an intense competition like this one other than being here before. We did our best as a young team and gained invaluable experience and can hopefully use that to get back here again. Like I mentioned before, just making it to nationals is just a huge accomplishment, like winning a first round game in every other 64-team tournament. We'll return five of our seven runners next season and utilize this experience to get even better."
Sophomore sensation Grace Forbes capped off a season in which she won five of seven races by placing 45th overall with a time of 20:01.8, just missing out on her second All-American recognition by five spots. Forbes was the individual winner at the NCAA South Central Regional, becoming the second Owl in program history to accomplish the feat. She also won the C-USA Championship individual title
The rest of the Owls' scorers included senior Lourdes Vivas de Lorenzi (217th-21:23.4), sophomore Caitlin Wosika (226th-21:39.7), sophomore Taigen Hunter-Galvan (230th-21:43.9), and junior Alyssa Balandran (242nd-22:28.4). Also competing for the Owls were sophomore Rachel Shoemaker (245th-22:40.8) and freshman Haley Allen (246th-22:43.7).
Rice was coming off of a second-place finish at the NCAA South Central Regional in which they earned the automatic berth to the NCAA Championships and placed four runners on the All-Region teams.
