Owls travel to Houston next Friday.
In Brief: Antonio Cruz drove in four runs with a pair of doubles, but visiting Sam Houston State claimed a 14-8, 12-inning, exhibition win over the Rice baseball team Friday evening at Reckling Park.
The Details: Friday's game was the first of two exhibitions the Owls are scheduled to play during the fall after three weeks of intrasquad activity under new head coach Jose Cruz Jr. Antonio Cruz was one of three Owls to collect a pair of hits and Jack Riedel, Justin Long and Ben Dukes each chipped in a pair of hits and Riedel scoring a pair of runs. A total of 13 pitchers saw action on Friday, with Roel Garcia opening the day by facing the minimum in the first inning and Mathew Linskey closing things out by striking out the side in the 12th.
Jose Cruz Jr: "Pitching-wise we didn't execute as well as we have all fall. Today was a little rough, but that happens. We put a lot of guys in and in a lot of different places. Some guys did great, so guys not so good. It will really be good for us to focus on the details of our approaches at the plate. The same can be said about the pitchers. We are preaching about attacking the zone early and we did not today. So now we'll come back a little hungrier and see what UH has."
Up Next: The Owls will wrap up the exhibition portion of the fall season a week from Friday when they travel across Highway 288 to take on the Houston Cougars at 6 p.m.
