Four Owls earn all-conference honors
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Rice Owls men's cross country team placed fourth as a team at Saturday morning's Conference USA Championships as they accumulated 71 points and had four all-conference performances for a second straight season.
For a fifth straight season the Owls placed four runners in the Top-21 and on Saturday were led by senior Hociel Landa, who placed third overall in the 8k race with a time of 24:06. It marked the first time the Owls had an individual runner on the medal stand at the C-USA Championships since Simon Bucknell won the individual title in 2009. Landa, who picked up his fifth career cross country all-conference recognition, earned First Team honors by racing at a 4:50 pace.
Also earning all-conference honors for the Owls was senior Alex Topini, who placed ninth overall with a time of 24:28 to snag Second Team accolades, his third cross country all-conference recognition of his career. Elliot Metcalf (24:42) and Andrew Abikhaled (24:49) rounded out Rice's all-conference performers, finishing 15th and 19th, respectively. The all-conference performance was the third of Abikhaled's career while Metcalf earned his first. Travis Dowd all scored for the Owls placing 25th with a time of 25:02.
The Owls will now set their eyes on the NCAA South Central Regional, which will be hosted by Baylor on Nov. 12 and will get underway at 11 a.m.
