Series Notes
Saturday will the 14th time the Owls have made their first appearance in a Conference USA stadium since they joined the conference in 2005 (discounting those opponents they had faced prior to joining C-USA). The first of those inaugural appearances came in Birmingham in 2005 when the Owls lost their debut game in C-USA, 45-26 to UAB. Overall, Rice is 8-5 in its first games in C-USA stadiums, including a 31-28 win over Middle Tennessee in 2019 in its most recent occurrence.
Familiar Setting
Saturday's game will be the second of four consecutive Homecoming games for Rice. The Owls opened the stretch last weekend at UTSA and will return home next Saturday to host North Texas for Rice's 101st Homecoming game before closing out the stretch by providing the competition for Charlotte's gathering of alumni on November 6.
Picks in Bunches
Rice picked off four passes vs. Southern Miss, their highest total in a home game since the swiped five vs. Hawai'i in 2000 and their most in any game since they picked off five at Marshall last December. Those two efforts give the Owls nine interceptions in their last four conference games. The effort vs. Southern Miss gave them at least one pass in three consecutive games, their longest streak since they had three at the start of the 2013 season. The Owls have seven interceptions this season, their most since they had eight in 2018. The last time they had nine was in 2014 and the last time they reached double figures was in 2013 when they finished the 14 on their way to winning the C-USA title. A total of six Owls have an interception this season, matching the total from last year. The last time they had more than six players with an interception in a season was in 2014 when seven players picked off at least one pass.
Doubling Up
Josh Pearcy (11) and Trey Schuman (10) each recorded their first double-digit tackle game vs. Southern Miss. Rice now has four players to be credited with a least 10 tackles in a game this year, joining Antonio Montero (twice) and Treshawn Chamberlain and three others who have topped it in previous seasons (Kirk Lockhart, 2020; George Nyakwol 2018; Kenneth Orji 2019).
