Rice Memories: Brent Scott

I can't believe it's been over 30 years since I arrived on campus at Rice University from Lansing, MI. I remember moving into Jones South with my teammate and brother Marvin Moore. That same day I met Rice Football great and friend Trevor Cobb as he was moving into Jones as well. My brothers Scott Tynes and Dajuan Eubanks joined Marvin and I to complete our incoming freshman basketball class! Rice hadn't had a winning season in close to over 20 years when we arrived back in 1989. By our senior season we were one game away from winning the Southwest Conference! I was so fortunate to play for great coaches that believed in me and great teammates that sacrificed their own success for the goals of the team. Getting to watch our 1992 win over Texas at Autry Court in "The Jungle" on ESPN this spring on Facebook brought back so many great memories and getting to watch and talk about it with my brothers made it even more special!!
Rice University helped prepare me for the world and the challenges I have faced ever since. It was a special time to be a student-athlete at Rice during my era. Getting the opportunity to play and compete in the SWC was second to none. Wayne Graham became the head baseball coach my senior year and it was awesome to watch all of his success including a National Championship for our baseball program. The thing I enjoyed most was the relationships I developed with my fellow student-athletes and students of all different races. I loved the way our teams all supported one another and the way we were there for each another. I want to thank Owl Football great OJ Brigance for taking me under his wing and showing me what it looked like to be a true leader.
I think it's very unique that I not only had the opportunity to be a student-athlete at Rice but also come back and start my college coaching career for my former head coach Willis Wilson. Much Appreciation to Mike Rhoades for giving me a second opportunity to come back home to join his staff and be a part of a 23-win season (2nd most wins in school history) which led to my current situation as a part of his staff at VCU!
Special Thanks to all of my coaches (Scott Thompson, Willis Wilson, Grey Giovanni, Tom Billeter, Trent Johnson, Todd Smith & Marty Gross) for the opportunity, patience and time they put in to help me become the player I was and man, husband, father and coach that I am today. Much love to all of my teammates for all of their sacrifice and for the memories you helped me create, that will last a lifetime.
I am so excited with the direction my great friend Coach Scott Pera has the Men Basketball Owls Headed!! Keep Building & Moving Forward!!
