Second straight season for junior center
DALLAS – Rice women's basketball junior center Nancy Mulkey became the fifth player in Conference USA history to be named Defensive Player of the Year in consecutive seasons, the league office announced Tuesday morning.
The league leader in blocked shots (77) and blocked shots per game (3.21-5th in NCAA), Mulkey has been the anchor of a Rice defense that ranks 38th in the NCAA in scoring defense (57.8 ppg) and 41st in defensive field-goal percentage (36.6).
A C-USA First Team and All-Defensive Team selection on Monday, Mulkey has posted three or more blocks in a game 13 times this season and set the single-game school record with 11 rejections as part of just the second triple double in Rice history on Nov. 13 at SMU.
Mulkey was selected C-USA Player of the Week on Jan. 20 and was named to the Preseason Lisa Leslie Award Watch List, honoring the nation's top centers.
The Owls will open the C-USA Championship tournament in Frisco, Texas on Thursday at 11 a.m. against the winner of Marshall/Southern Miss in the quarterfinals round.
