Owls Continue Homestand With C-USA Weekend Series Vs. Marshall
Records/Series: Rice is now 2-14 overall. Texas AM improved to 15-5 on the season with its fifth consecutive win. The former conference rivals were meeting for the 283rd time dating back to 1914.
One Game, 16 Pitchers: Both teams used a total of eight pitchers for a total of 16 arms in the game overall. Sophomore left-hander Brandon Deskins started and fired 2.0 scoreless frames. Junior right-hander Kel Borwine was sound and solid pitching 2.0 scoreless innings with a strikeout. The Aggies did not get their first base hit of the game until the Top of the fifth.
Lovin' The Longball: Both of Rice runs were scored via the home run. The Owls were the first on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth. With two away junior catcher Justin Collins launched the first pitch he saw over the wall in left field. Collins would go on to have two hits in the game. Senior Rodrigo Duluc then led off the bottom of the fifth with a solo shot to left. The respective round-trippers were Collins' and Duluc's first of the season.
Let Me Be The First: When Collins and Duluc both made their trots around the bases, the first Owl to congratulate them was their head coach. Matt Bragga had the third base coaching duty Tuesday in place of his assistant coach Paul Janish.
Cruz Control: With his base hit in the bottom of the first inning junior shortstop Trei Cruz extended his hitting streak to a season-best six games. Cruz has also reached base in each of the last nine games.
C-USA Play On Friday: Conference USA play opens for all league institutions March 13-15. The Owls welcome Marshall to Reckling Park for games starting at 6:30 pm on Friday, 2 pm on Saturday and 1 pm on Sunday. The C-USA foes met four times last season, including the most recent clash in Biloxi, Miss., in the conference tournament. Because of quirk in the C-USA schedule, the Thundering Herd is making its first trip to Reckling Park since 2013.
Fun & Games At Reckling Park: There is a lot to look forward to this weekend at Reckling Park! Friday features a T-shirt giveaway determined by fan voting. Saturday is the annual Kids Take Over the Ballpark event. Sunday marks the return of Bark In The Park, where fans will be allowed to bring their dog with them to that game.
