Owls Fall to Ragin’ Cajuns
2/7/2020 5:27:00 PM | Men's Tennis
Host Texas A&M Corpus Christi on Tuesday
Houston: Conrad Russell picked up wins in doubles and singles, but the Rice Owls fell to Louisiana 6-1 at the George R. Brown Tennis Center on Friday afternoon.
Doubles: Russell and Campbell Salmon raced to a 6-0 victory on the second line to improve to 2-1 on the season, but the Ragin' Cajuns (8-1) captured the doubles point against Rice (1-3) for the third consecutive year. They survived a break point at 3-3 at the first line and then closing out a 6-3 win to take the early lead.
Singles: Louisiana took five of six first sets in singles--with the Russell the lone Owl to take an early advantage--then withstood a surge by Rice in the second sets to win for the third time in the history of the series. Rice won a pair of second sets and took a third to a tiebreaker, but saw Louisiana prevail in each match. Russell shook off a tiebreaker loss in his second set and ground out an 11-9 win in a superset to pick up the win.
Efe Ustundag: "Louisiana is a better team than the one that came in here last year, but we've got to be better. Louisiana played hard and played well on every court. We were creating opportunities, but not taking advantage of them. If we get the break at No. 1 doubles and get the point, then those thirds sets are on the court and we're down 3-1. Adam and Eric found ways to extend their matches. That might have been the best offensive tennis that Adam has played in quite a while. He was getting broken in some really tight games and then he started winning a couple deuce games and gave himself a shot. Conrad came back from being down 5-2 in the second set to force a tiebreaker. There are no moral victories at this level, but at least they gave themselves a chance."
Up Next: The Owls will be back on the courts on Tuesday when they host Texas A&M Corpus Christi, who dropped a 5-2 decision to Louisiana last weekend, at 2 p.m.
