Owls Make Final Road Appearance Saturday at LA Tech
For the final time this season the Rice Owls women's basketball team hits the road for a Saturday matinee at Louisiana Tech. The Owls are coming off a pair of wins last week and carry a 7-5 road record to Thomas Assembly Center. The Owls defeated the Lady Techsters earlier this season on Jan. 16, 60-47. In that game the Owls spread the wealth offensively with Sydne Wiggins leading the team with 12 points. The Lady Techsters are 11-5 at home this season but have dropped six of their last nine contests overall.
About Tech
The Lady Techsters enter the weekend in 11th place in the C-USA standings with a 5-10 conference record. Tech gets to the free throw line at one of the highest ranks in the country, coming in at No. 28 in free throws made and 36th in free throws attempted. Amber Dixon (12.0 ppg) leads the team in scoring while Keiunna Walker (11.3 ppg) also averages double-figures.
Last Time Out
The Rice Owls women's basketball team earned a hard-fought 74-65 road victory at UAB last Saturday. Erica Ogwumike made 6-of-10 shots from the field, 8-of-9 from the free throw line, for a team-high 21 points along with seven rebounds and a pair of steals. Sophomore point guard Jasmine Smith complimented her scoring with 17 points, which included a career-best 4-of-4 performance from three-point territory. Freshman wing Lauren Schwartz also scored in double-figures with 12 points. As a team the Owls (18-8, 13-2) shot 10-of-21 from beyond the arc, the second-most three-point makes by the team this season and the most since entering league play. The Owls also committed a season-low eight turnovers and held the nation's fifth-best three-point shooting team (38.6 percent) to just 4-of-17 (24%) from deep.
2,000 Points & 1,000 Rebounds
Ogwumike (2,017 career points/1,067 rebounds) is now just one of three active NCAA Division I players to collect 2,000 career points and 1,000 rebounds, joining Oregon's Ruthy Hebard Sabrina Ionescu. She joined former Owl great Jessica Kuster (2,081 points/1,376 rebounds) as the only players to accomplish the feat in a Rice uniform.
Langley Reaches Century Mark
Rice head coach Tina Langley (100-57) recorded her 100th career victory last Saturday to secure, becoming the quickest in Rice history to accomplish the feat. Under Langley's guidance the Owls have won 91 games over the last four seasons.
What's Next
The Owls make their final regular homestand appearance next week when they host UTEP (Thursday, Mar. 5) and Old Dominion (Saturday, Mar. 7).
