Ogwumike joins 2,000-points/1,000-rebounds club; Langley quickest in program history to 100 wins
BIRMINGHAM, AL – The Rice Owls women's basketball team earned a hard-fought 74-65 road victory at UAB Saturday afternoon on a day where the team turned in a pair of historic milestones.
Senior guard Erica Ogwumike scored a team-high 21 points in the victory and in the process joined Oregon's Ruthy Hebard as the only active NCAA Division I players to reach 2,000 career points and 1,000 career rebounds. Ogwumike (2,017 points/1,067 rebounds) joined Jessica Kuster as the only players in program history to accomplish the feat.
In addition, Rice head coach Tina Langley recorded her 100th career victory to become the quickest coach to reach the century mark in program history.
Ogwumike made 6-of-10 shots from the field, 8-of-9 from the free throw line, along with seven rebounds and a pair of steals. Sophomore point guard Jasmine Smith complimented her scoring with 17 points, which included a career-best 4-of-4 performance from three-point territory. Freshman wing Lauren Schwartz also scored in double-figures with 12 points.
As a team the Owls (18-8, 13-2) shot 10-of-21 from beyond the arc, the second-most three-point makes by the team this season and the most since entering league play. The Owls also committed a season-low eight turnovers and held the nation's fifth-best three-point shooting team (38.6 percent) to just 4-of-17 (24%) from deep.
UAB (17-10, 9-6) was led in scoring by senior guard Miyah Barnes, who scored a game-high 25 points.
