MT&F: Distance Medley Relay Team Wins Gold at C-USA Championships

BIRMINGHAM, AL - For a third consecutive season the Rice Owls men's distance medley relay squad took the top spot on the podium at the Conference USA Indoor Track & Field Championships, highlighting day one at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
The foursome of Elliot Metcalf, Keegan O'Connor, Jason Bugg and Alex Topini rallied to defeat the field with a season-best time of 10:03.24. It marked the second straight year that the junior Bugg was involved in a conference DMR victory, qualifying earlier in the evening for Sunday's finals in the 800m with a time of 1:53.33. Topini and Metcalf also qualified for Sunday's finals in the mile, placing fourth (4:17.93) and seventh (4:15.11), respectively.
The Owls received an all-conference performance from Nick Hicks in the weight throw, establishing a PR of 19.35m (63-06.00) on his first attempt. In the same event, senior Michael Yow earned an additional four points by placing fifth overall with a mark of 17.87m (58-07.50) on his fourth throw.
In the vault, sophomore Alex Slinkman earned a spot on the medal stand with a third place finish, earning bronze by clearing 5.08m (16-08.00) while fellow sophomore teammate Thomas Pratt placed fourth overall in the event, clearing 4.98m (16-04.00) for 4.5 points.
Sophomore Corbett Fong racked up 2664 points through four events of the heptathlon and enters Sunday in fourth place. Fong placed third in the 60m dash (7.30) and was fourth in the long jump (6.70m). O'Connor, who was part of the winning DMR, sits in eighth place (2355 points) in the heptathlon while Chance Allshouse is in ninth place (2343 points).
Through six scored events the Owls are in second place, collecting 34.5 points and trailing only Charlotte (52 points).
