Owls Square off Against No. 10 Texas A&M
For a fourth straight year the Rice Owls will take on the Texas A&M Aggies with the two teams squaring off from College Station this Sunday. The Aggies have won the previous three meetings by an average of just six points per game, including a 62-61 win last season at Tudor Fieldhouse. Rice is out to a 4-0 start this season for the seventh time in program history and are ranked 24th in the NCAA in scoring margin at +23.0 points per game. The Owls and Aggies are two of just 15 undefeated teams remaining in the NCAA who have played at least four games.
Learning the Opponent
The Aggies have won seven straight to start the season, their best start since the 2014-15 campaign. A&M is coming off of a 99-69 win over Sam Houston St. on Tuesday. The Aggies are averaging 81.6 points per game while surrendering 65.7 points per contest. In a poll of Southeastern Conference women's basketball coaches, Texas A&M was selected to finish third in the field of 14, with N'dea Jones named to the Preseason All-SEC First Team and Kayla Wells selected to the All-SEC Second Team.
Last Time Out
After a 10-day layoff, the Owls showed little to no rust by defeating the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns 83-51 Wednesday afternoon. The Owls shot a season-best 63.6 percent from the field while also dishing out a season-high 23 assists on their 31 made field goals. All 10 players who saw action registered points, including a game-high 18 points from senior center Nancy Mulkey. Mulkey's performance (8-of-8 from the floor) was second only to Zoe Rogers (9-of-9/Feb. 25, 2010) in the Rice record book for most made field goals without a miss.
Leading the League
Rice has dominated through their first four games, leading all Conference USA team in: assist turnover ratio (+1.11), total assists (79), assists per game (19.8), total blocked shots (15), blocks per game (3.8), defensive rebounds per game (34.2), field goal percentage (51.3), field goal percentage defense (29.6), fewest personal fouls per game (14.5), rebounding margin (+13.0), scoring margin (+23.0), and three point percentage (44.9).
Hot Potato with the Rock
The Owls have been one of the most efficient teams in the nation offensively, ranking seventh in the NCAA in field goal percentage (51.3). A big reason for their success is the beautiful ball movement, averaging nearly 20 assists per game (19.8-14th in NCAA) as a team. Senior Sydne Wiggins (5.0 apg-3rd in C-USA) and junior Jasmine Smith (4.5 apg-7th in C-USA) each rank in the top-10 in the league in assist per game.
No Points for You
Defensively the Owls rank sixth in the NCAA in opponents' field goal percentage (29.6) and are surrendering just 55.2 points per game, which ranks 27th in the NCAA.
Extending the Streak
Dating back to last season the Owls have won nine consecutive games, tied for the 9th-longest active streak in the NCAA. During Tina Langley's era with the Owls, Rice has recorded seven different winning streaks of six or more games.
