Last Game: Trip & Treats
Rice evened its season record at 1-1 and extended its C-USA road winning streak to three games with a 30-6 win at Southern Miss on Halloween. Key team notes from the win:
• The last time Rice has won more than three consecutive C-USA road games was during a five-game streak from 10/27/12 to 10/12/13.
• The win snapped a five-game losing streak for the Owls vs. Southern Miss.
• Rice held the Golden Eagles out of the end zone for the first time in the history of the series and for first time in any game since they defeated Fresno State 30-6 in the 2014 Hawai'i Bowl. It was the second time in their 16 seasons in C-USA the Owls have held a conference foe out of the end zone (Memphis in 2011).
• Rice limited Southern Miss to 15 plays for 54 yards and 7:51 of possession time in the 2nd half.
• Rice has now won four of its last five C-USA games.
The Triggerman
Grad transfer Mike Collins is the first quarterback in school history to throw for at least four touchdowns in each of his first two games and leads Conference USA with a 181.3 passing efficiency rating (8th nationally). Collins, who opened his career on South Main vs. Middle Tennessee by completing just two of his first 10 passes for 35 yards and an interception, has gone 35-52-1 for 475 yards and eight touchdowns. He is the first Rice quarterback to throw for at least eight touchdowns in consecutive games since Chase Clement threw four vs. Marshall and five against Houston in the final two games of the 2008 season. Clement owns the school record with six TD passes in a game, setting the mark in the first game of the 2008 season and matching it twice more that season. He also had three games with five TD passes. Tyler Stehling (vs. Prairie View in 2016) is the only other Rice QB to throw five TDs in a game.
The Sheriff
Senior co-captain Austin Trammell was named to the has already established a career best with five touchdown receptions in the first two games of the season and leads the Owls in receptions (10) and receiving yards (219) in addition to touchdowns. Trammell is the first Owls receiver to catch five TD passes over two games since James Casey and Jarett Dillard both did it in 2008. He also extended his streak of consecutive games with a reception to 29 which is tied with Houston's Marquez Stevenson for the fourth longest active streak. He leads C-USA in scoring with 16 points per game (5 touchdowns; 1, 2-point conversion) and ranks second in with 109 yards per game. He moved from 10th to seventh on the Owls career receiving list with 1,628 yards and needs 119 to move past Toren Dixon into sixth. He became the ninth Owl to top 3,000 career all-purpose yards (3,027) and he needs 29 to move past Quinton Smith into eighth.
