Updating the Owls in action
Detroit rookie punter Jack Fox, who was named the NFL Special Teams Player of the Month for September, continued to sparkle for the Lions while Andrew Sendjo enjoyed a triumphant return to Texas to highlight Week Four of the NFL season for former Rice Owls.
Flipping the script from last week, here is the answer to this week's trivia question, which is located in below in the update (happy hunting):
Calvin Anderson—The first Owl offensive lineman to appear in the league since Courtney Hall from 1989-96 Andersen made his debut vs. Tennessee in the opener on special teams and has continued in that role in each of the first four games, playing a career-best seven snaps in the win over the Jets. The Broncos head east to face New England on Sunday at 3:25 p.m. (CBS).
Chris Boswell—Boswell and fellow Owl Vance McDonald had an unexpected weekend off when the Steelers game with Tennessee was postponed due to positive COVID-19 tests on the Titans. The Steelers return to action on Sunday when they host the Eagles at noon (FOX).
Bryce Callahan- Was credited with seven tackles and a pass breakup in the Broncos win over the Jets. The Broncos head east to face New England on Sunday at 3:25 p.m. (CBS).
Christian Covington—Covington was credited with a season high four tackles while matching his season high with 38 defensive snaps as the Bengals won for the first time, downing Jacksonville 33-25. The Bengals are on the road this week in Baltimore to take on the Ravens at noon (CBS).
Jack Fox—Fox continues to lead the NFL in punting average both in total yards (53.4) and net punting (49.9). The Lions will be on the couch on Sunday as they have a bye week.
Phillip Gaines— Gaines was credited with a season-high three tackles while playing in 18 snaps on defense and 12 on special teams in the Texans loss to the Vikings. He will be back in action on Sunday as the Texans host Jacksonville at noon (CBS).
Vance McDonald— McDonald and fellow Owl Chris Boswell had an unexpected weekend off when the Steelers game with Tennessee was postponed due to positive COVID-19 tests on the Titans. McDonald needs 22 yards receiving to reach 2,000 in his NFL career. Look no further, you've found this this week's trivia question … McDonald would become the fourth Owl to reach 2,000 career receiving yards. Can you name the other three? The Steelers return to action on Sunday when they host the Eagles at noon (FOX).
Andrew Sendejo— Has played every defensive snap for the Browns in the first four games and was credited with four tackles and his second career forced fumble and the Browns raced past the Cowboys in Dallas. It was his 114th career game in the NFL which ranks 12th in school history. He is five games from passing Courtney Hall for 11th. Larry Izzo holds the school mark with 200 games. The Browns host the Colts on Sunday at 3:25 in a matchup of teams off to a 3-1 start. (CBS).
Luke Willson— The final member of the Seahawks' 2013 draft class still active in the league, Willson is in his eighth season in the NFL and his seventh with the Seattle did not record a catch in the Seahawks 31-23 win at Miami. They will have a week to recover from the long jaunt to South Florida as they enter a bye week.
Rice has nine active players currently in the NFL, matching the most Owls to play in an NFL season. Nine Owls saw action in 2015 to set a school record, but only eight were active for the opening weekend. Rice also had nine former players active in professional football between the NFL and AFL in 1961 and nine between the NFL and the All American Football Conference in 1948.
