Hicks Sets PR in Weight Throw

HOUSTON - Rice sophomore thrower Nicks Hicks set a personal best with a throw of 19.24m (63-01.50) in the weight throw to place third on day one of the Houston Invitational Friday at Yeoman Fieldhouse. Hicks' third-place mark came on his final attempt and ranks as the number one throw in Conference USA this indoor season. Senior teammate Michael Yow placed fourth in the weight throw, recording a distance of 18.04m, which ranks third in C-USA.
Other highlights from Friday included Rice's performance in the pole vault. Sophomore Thomas Pratt placed second among collegiate performers, clearing 5.20m (17-00.75) for a new PR and a mark which ranks second in C-USA. Sophomore Alex Slinkman also established a PR in the vault, clearing 5.05m (16-06.75) for the third-best height in C-USA.
Day two of the Houston Invitational will begin on Saturday, starting at 9:30 a.m. with the men's 60m hurdles in the heptathlon.
