Sunshine returns and Owls post 12-5 record for the day
The Lede: Anastasia and Victoria Smirnova joined Anna Bowtell in picking up a pair of singles wins to lead the Rice women's team on a long day of tennis at the George R. Brown Tennis Center during the annual Rice Invitational on Saturday.
The Details: After rain continuously hampered play on Friday, the weather calmed on Saturday, allowing the tournament's 78 players to complete two rounds of singles and one round of doubles. The Smirnova twins swept to a pair of wins in singles Flight 1 while Bowtell reached the Flight 2. While the Smirnovas will not meet on Sunday, Bowtell will face Yu Chen of Auburn on Sunday for the flight title. Each of Rice's three doubles entries also won their first matches, closing out a combined 12-5 day for the Owls.
