Home and home with BYU and home games with McNeese, Sam Houston State and Texas Southern
Rice and BYU have agreed to a home and home football series in 2023 and 2025 and the Owls have also added games with McNeese State (2022), Sam Houston State (2024) and Texas Southern (2023) to their future football schedules.
"These additions align with our non-conference scheduling philosophy while providing balance between home and road games each year." Rice Director of Athletics Joe Karlgaard said. "BYU has a national brand and a great fan base. McNeese State, Sam Houston and TSU are schools in close proximity to Rice and an easy trip for their fans."
The Owls and Cougars met twice as members of the Western Athletic Conference. Rice was blanked by 12th ranked BYU in Provo, Utah in 1996, but the Owls turned the tables the following year, downing the 21st ranked Cougars 27-14 at Rice Stadium.
In order to accommodate the 2023 game with BYU, Rice and Boise State have agreed to move the game scheduled between the schools in Boise to 2029.
Rice will meet McNeese State for the first time in history on September 10, 2022 joining Louisiana as non-conference home games that season along with road games at USC and Houston.
Rice and Sam Houston State will meet for the 18th time in history and the first time since 1993 when the Bearkats come to Rice Stadium on August 31, 2024. The schools first met in Rice's first season of football (1912) and met for ten consecutive seasons (1922-31) and again in 1939, 1941, 1992 and 1993. Rice leads the series 16-1.
