Owls Next Begin Three-Game Homestand Sunday vs. Oregon State
DALLAS – The SMU soccer team scored early goals in each half to claim a 2-0 win over the visiting Rice Owls Thursday evening in Dallas.
It was the Owls that just missed a sensational chance to score in only the game's fourth minute by pushing a close-range shot just wide of a near open goal. SMU was quick to counter attack and opened the scoring in the 11th minute. Hannah Allred fielded a pass from Nguenign Balata and found the back of the Rice net for her first goal of the season. The Mustangs jumped on the board to start the second half as Allred netted her second goal of the night in the 46th minute.
Rice is now 3-3-0 overall. SMU improved to 5-1-0 on the season. The silver lining for the Owls was the return of junior midfielder Lianne Mananquil to the field after being sidelined since August 25 vs. Houston. The 2018 C-USA Midfielder of the Year was sound and solid playing a total of 61 minutes.
SMU held a 7-2 advantage in both corner kicks and shots-on-goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Bella Killgore finished the night posting a season high five saves.
The Owls have wrapped a rugged stretch of out-of-town games and are next in home action on Sunday (Sept.15). The Blue & Gray host undefeated Pac-12 power Oregon State (6-0-0) at Holloway Field at 7 pm.
