THIS WEEK: The Rice soccer team plays a match on the road (Sept. 12) and a match at home (Sept. 15). The Owls meet longtime rival SMU on Thursday at 7 pm in Dallas. The Blue & Gray then face Pac-12 power Oregon State at 7 pm on Sunday at Holloway Field.
QUICK ON THE OWLS (3-2-0): Rice has a winning record after the first five games. The Owls won the season opener on the road at Oral Roberts 2-1 (Aug. 22) before posting a convincing 3-0 victory over crosstown rival Houston (Aug. 25). On Aug. 29 SEC power Alabama scored a late goal to slip past the Blue & Gray 2-1. Last weekend Rice split tournament matches in San Antonio, claiming a victory over Cleveland State and a loss vs. South Florida. In 2019 the Rice soccer team returns seven of 11 starters from last season's squad that went 7-9-1 and advanced to the Conference USA Tournament. The Owls return a total of 18 letterwinners from a year ago and welcome in a talented new recruiting class. Rice is in a tough stretch of the schedule and not slated to play at home again until Sept. 15.
COACH'S CORNER: Rice soccer is under the direction of head coach Brian Lee, who is in his first season at the helm of the program. A 2018 finalist for National Coach of the Year and with 25 years of experience as a Division I head coach, Lee enters this week's games with a career record of 290-190-55. Lee's Rice coaching staff includes Megan Kinneman, Travis Curson and Allysha Chapman, all in their first year with the Owl program. Coach Lee's weekly video preview is available at the above link.
SERIES HISTORY: The Owls and SMU are longtime foes that dates back to 2001 when Rice began its varsity soccer program. SMU leads the all-time series 11-6-2. The 19 matches are the second-most times Rice has played an opponent. More recently the Blue & Gray is 4-2-2 against SMU in the last eight meetings. Rice is facing Oregon State for the first time in soccer.
HAIL SENIORS!: Four Rice players have scored eight of the team's nine goals – and four of them have been seniors. Owl veterans Haley Kostyshyn, Louise Stephens, Lianne Mananquil and Erin Mikeska have led the Blue & Gray to the back of the opposing net (with Kostyshyn scoring three times and Mikeska and Stephens both scoring twice).
NEXT WEEK: After facing Oregon State Rice has two more matches coming up at Holloway Field next week as well. The Owls host crosstown foe Texas Southern on Sept. 18 at 7 pm. Rice opens Conference USA league play against Charlotte on Sept. 22 at 1 pm.
