MIRAMAR, FL - For a second straight year a member of the Rice men's track and field program earned gold at the USATF U20 Outdoor Championships. Following Hociel Landa's victory in the 10k last year, Rice freshman Corbett Fong gave the Owls a second individual national title in as many years with a win in the decathlon on Sunday.
Fong, from Tomball, Texas (Concordia Lutheran HS), set a season-best mark with 6766 points to win the four-man field at the Ansin Sports Complex. Fong established personal best marks in each of the 110m hurdles (15.78), pole vault (4.20m), and discus (43.83m). He won the discus, javelin, and 1500m and finished ahead of Jett Kinder (unattached-6512 pts), Carl Omohundro III (unattached-6244 pts), and California's Hakim McMorris (5871 pts).
As a freshman, Fong placed fifth (6507 pts) in both the decathlon and the heptathlon (4633 pts) at the C-USA Outdoor and Indoor Championships, respectively.
