Owls Sweep C-USA Tennis Honors
Sophomore Sumit Sarkar has been named the 2019 Conference USA Men's Tennis Player of the Year in voting by conference coaches, joining Michaela Haet to give the Owls their first sweep of conference tennis player of the year honors in school history.
Sarkar is the first Owl to capture the men's tennis honor since Bruno Rosa in 2010 and the fourth to earn conference player of the year accolades. Richard Barker and Robert Searle captured WAC Player of the Year honors in 2003 and 2005. Sarkar and Haet are the first players from the same school to sweep the C-USA honors since Story Tweedie-Yates and Fabrizio Sestini of TCU in 2005.
He is the fourth Owl to be named Player of the Year in C-USA in 2018-19, joining Haet, Nicole Lennon (Volleyball) and Eric Ogwumike (Women's Basketball).
He was also named to the All-Conference USA singles and doubles first team, joining Eric Rutledge and Conrad Russell on the doubles first team. Rutledge and Jacob Eskeland were both named to the singles second team.
Sarkar finished the dual season with a 17-5 record at the first singles line, the second-most wins by an Owl at the top lineup spot since 1994 and earned C-USA's qualifying slot in the NCAA Singles Championship as the highest ranked player in the conference (currently 44th). He was a three-time C-USA Male Tennis Athlete of the Week honoree and won his last five matches against ranked opponents, including a win over then No. 4 Christian Sigsgaard of Texas.
Sarkar was an automatic selection to the All-Conference USA Men's Tennis first team in singles and doubles by virtue of appearing in the Oracle ITA national rankings at the end of the dual season. He was named in doubles with both Eric Rutledge (currently ranked 40th) and Conrad Russell (currently ranked 56th). He and Rutledge combined to clinch six of the Owls 13 doubles points during the dual season and were 3-2 in doubles against conference opponents, including a 7-6 win over Charlotte's 36th ranked Luca Keist and Constandinos Christoforou to clinch the doubles point in the Owls opening match of the C-USA tournament.
Sarkar is the first Owl to qualify for the NCAA men's singles championship since Rosa in 2010. He will open play on May 20 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida.
