Former Rice tennis player and coach Shaheen Ladhani is one of seven new appointees to the Board of Directors for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, who were announced last week by ITA Chief Executive Officer Timothy Russell.
Created to support the ITA and college tennis, the Board of Directors is chaired by Jon Vegosen, a founding member of the Chicago corporate and litigation law firm Funkhouser Vegosen Liebman & Dunn Ltd. Russell, as the Association's president and chief executive officer, also serves on the board.
Currently an Investment Advisor with Goldman, Sachs, Ladhani was a fixture with Rice men's tennis from 1994-2006.
He transferred to Rice in the fall of 1994 after two seasons at Tennessee-Martin and won the Sammy Giammalva Award in 1995 as the tennis team's most valuable player. In 1996, he stepped into the role of interim head coach and led them to a pair of tournament titles, including a win at the Rice Invitational. The following year he became Ron Smarr's assistant coach and helped guide the program's rise up the national rankings.
He was named the ITA Region VI Assistant Coach of the Year in 2002 after the Owls finished 21-9 and then National Assistant Coach of the Year in 2004 after the Owls finished 24-4, captured the WAC Championship and advanced to the round of 16 at the NCAA Championship. He took a year away from Rice the following year to coach former Rice All-Americans Richard and William Barker on the pro tour, but returned for 2005-06 season as a volunteer coach.
Prior to joining Goldman Sachs, he served as director of alumni, corporate and foundation relations at Rice University's Jones Graduate School of Business. He earned an undergraduate degree in psychology and managerial studies from Rice University while competing and later added a Master's degree in sport psychology and MBA from Rice.
