17th ranked high school senior
Rice head men's tennis coach Efe Ustundag announced on Friday the Owls have signed Wes Barnett of Little Rock, Arkansas to a national letter of intent to join the Owls for the 2019-2020 season.
"We're thrilled to add Wes to our team," Ustundag said. "He's been having some great success over the last two years and will be a great addition our lineup. I can't wait to have him on the court and join our team in competition this fall."
Barnett is currently the top ranked player in the USTA Boys 18 and under division and is ranked as the 17th best high school senior in the country by tennisrecruiting.net. He has won four USTA National Level 2 Tournaments in his career, including a win in both singles and a doubles title at an event in San Antonio in February. He was the runner up at a Level 2 event in Kansas City last weekend and reached the quarter finals in doubles and the round of 16 in singles at the Easter Bowl ITF Championship in March.
Last October, Barnett won the Austin, Texas Grade 5 ITF singles and doubles title. He also captured the singles title at the USTA Corpus Christi Level 2 Nationals. Last summer, he competed in the USTA National Clay Courts, Hard Courts and Team Championships representing Team Southern Section. In June, he finished fourth in the L1 South Closed Championship in Mobile, Alabama.
