Southern Miss Tops Rice Friday 6-3

Game Two Of Weekend Series Set For 2 PM Saturday
HOUSTON – Visiting Southern Miss claimed a 6-3 Conference USA win over the Rice baseball team Friday afternoon at Reckling Park in Houston.
Records: Rice is now 21-28 on the season and 12-13 in C-USA league play. Southern Miss improved to 32-15 overall and held onto sole possession of first place in the conference standings with a 19-6 ledger.
Early Start: Because of expected rain throughout the Houston area Friday the game was moved up to a 2 pm start. The change accurately took advantage of a window of low precipitation percentages forecast for the afternoon, and the C-USA game was completed in under three hours before a crowd of more than 2,100 fans.
Vs. Southern Miss: Rice leads the all-time series with Southern Miss 27-20 dating back to the first meeting in 2006.
Offense: The Rice trio of Andrew Dunlap, Justin Collins and Bradley Gneiting all collected two hits in the game, with Collins and Gneiting scoring all three of the Owls' runs. Rice outhit USM 9-7 in the contest.
New No. 2: Junior second baseman Cade Edwards batted No. 2 in the order for the first time this season. The Houston native entered the game on a 23-for-53 (.463) stretch over the last 14 games.
On The Mound: Owls Matt Canterino, Blair Lewis and Drake Greenwood pitched for the Owls. Canterino finished the day with six strikeouts in 5.1 innings. He now has 330 strikeouts in his collegiate career.
On Deck: As of postgame publication time there is no change to Saturday to Saturday's 2 pm first pitch. The game has been designated as Fan Appreciation Day and there is a mini batting helmet giveaway for the first 300 fans.
