Rice Power Surge Continues With Two More Home Runs
HOUSTON – Senior Evan Kravetz recorded a career high 13 strikeouts for the most by a Rice pitcher in three years, to go along with two more home runs by his Owl teammates on the offensive side, to pace the Rice baseball team to a 7-2 Conference USA victory over Middle Tennessee Friday evening at Reckling Park.
Power Surge: Rice added two more home runs Friday to give the team a total of 36 this year, already surpassing 35 round-trippers the squad had all last season. The Blue & Gray zoomed past its 2018 home run total in just 70-percent of the at-bats. The squad's team slugging percentage is also higher this season (.422) than a year ago (.386).
Back-To-Back Jacks: The two home runs were back-to-back solo shots by Cade Edwards and Dominic Cox in the bottom of the fourth inning to give Rice a 2-0 lead. The Owls previously hit back-to-back blasts in the second game of the double-header at Old Dominion where Rice claimed an 11-2 win.
'K' Is For Kravetz: Evan Kravetz was electric in posting a career high 13 strikeouts in shutout 7.0 innings. The left-hander from Miami, Fla., allowed just one base hit, three walks and one hit batter to improve to 3-2 on the season. Not only is Kravetz' 13 strikeouts tied for the most by any C-USA pitcher this season, it is the most by an Owl hurler since Jon Duplantier recorded 14 against UCF in 2016.
Combined Starting Totals: Kravetz starting effort is only a day after fellow starting pitcher Matt Canterino recorded 10 strikeouts in 7.0 shutout innings in Thursday's series opener, a 10-4 Rice victory. In back-to-back games the Owls' two starting pitchers combined to throw 14.0 scoreless innings, scattering just four hits and five walks while striking out 23 opposing players. The opponents' batting average vs. the two starters this weekend is a combined .085.
Streaks: Cade Edwards went 2-for-3 to extend his hitting streak to six games (currently the longest active mark on the team). Junior third baseman Braden Comeaux had two hits and has now reached base in each of the last 16 games, the longest streak by any Owl this season.
Records: Rice is now 17-23 on the season and 8-9 in C-USA action to move into sole possession of seventh place in the league standings. Middle Tennessee is now 15-24 and 9-8 in conference.
Saturday In The Park: First pitch of Saturday's series finale is set for 12 noon at Reckling Park. The game is designated as the sixth annual Baseball For Babies event, benefitting the charity that helps families with children born prematurely (and that has close ties to the Rice Baseball program). There will be autographed items up for auction where the proceeds will go to Baseball For Babies, including a signed George Springer framed photo and signed Rice memorabilia. There will also be an Easter Egg Hunt prior and during the game on the third base side grass picnic area of the stadium, so bring the whole family for Saturday's game.
