Conference USA Male Tennis Athlete of the Week
Rice sophomore Sumit Sarkar has earned his third Conference USA Male Tennis Athlete of the Week award after posting his fifth win over the dual season over a ranked opponent. All C-USA weekly awards are presented by Top of the World.
He is the first Rice men's player to win the award outright three times in a season since Bruno Rosa was honored four times in 2008. Christoph Müller was honored twice and shared the honor with teammate Tobias Scheil in 2009.
Sarkar bounced back from a loss in the second set to defeat Tulane's 68th ranked Ewan Moore 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (3) to improve to 16-5 on the season and 5-2 vs. ranked opponents. Sarkar jumped three spots in the rankings to No. 41 with his win and enters the C-USA Championship as the highest ranked player in the conference. He has won nine of his last 10 matches overall, five consecutive over ranked opponents and has won his last five tiebreaker sets, including four to secure wins over ranked opposition.
His 16 wins at the first singles line are tied for the third most wins at that position for Rice since 1994.
Sarkar and his Rice teammates will open their pursuit for the Conference USA title on Friday as the fifth seed and will take on fourth seed Charlotte at 10 a.m. on Friday in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
