2019 InTouch Credit Union Conference USA Men’s Tennis All-Academic Team
Rice sophomore Sumit Sarkar, who has moved into the national singles top 50 heading into the Conference USA Championship this weekend, is one of six tennis players who have been named to the 2019 InTouch Credit Union Conference USA Men's Tennis All-Academic Team.
The team is selected by the academic advisors of the conference schools and honors tennis student athletes who have accumulated a 3.2 cumulative grade point average and have participated in 75% of their school's scheduled matches.
Sarkar has posted a 3.45 GPA while majoring in statistics in the classroom, while on the court he is currently ranked 44th in the Oracle/ITA singles rankings. He has a 16-5 record while playing exclusively at the first singles line. His 16 wins are tied for third at Rice since 1994. He earned the C-USA Male Tennis Athlete of the Week in consecutive weeks during the season, highlighted by a win over Texas' Christian Sigsgaard, who was ranked fourth in the nation at the time.
The Owls will open play in the Conference USA Championship on Friday in Murfreesboro, Tennessee when they take on Charlotte at 10 a.m. The winner will take on the winner of FAU and UAB in the semifinals at noon on Saturday. The title match is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Sunday.
