Owls Finish Fifth at NCAA South Central Regional

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - The Rice Owls men's cross country team placed all five scorers in the top 50 individual standings to finish fifth overall as a team at Friday's NCAA South Central Regional, hosted by Arkansas.
The Owls scored 202 points, while Texas (39 points), Arkansas (67 points), Texas A&M (128 points), and Lamar (134 points) finished first-fourth, respectively.
Rice was led by junior Hociel Landa's 33rd place (31:21) result in the 10k race, which was nearly a full minute better than last season's performance when he received all-region honors. Freshman Ace Castillo placed 35th (31:23) and was the Owls number two runner on the big stage.
Senior Connor Meaux (48th-31:39), sophomore Andrew Abikhaled (31:43), and senior Adolfo Carvalho (53rd-31:52) rounded out the Owls scorers. Other Owls to compete were Matthew Murray (81st-32:36) and Alex Topini (113th-33:16).
"Fifth in the region is a great result for us," Rice head coach Jon Warren said. "There are about 37 teams in this region and 24 full teams competed today. Coming in I had hoped we could be in the top five and we did that, but it didn't happen the way I thought it would. We had a spread of only 31 seconds between No. 1 and No. 5 (31:21-31:52). The top five all ran well with the biggest surprise being Connor finishing as our third man. I'm very pleased with the overall team effort and very happy with the way the team ran today and for the season. The icing on the cake is that this group will earn coveted Learfield Directors' Cup points. This was an excellent final result to a good year."
