Rice Splits 7-Inning Twinbill At Texas A&M
COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- As temperatures dropped across the state, the bats on the Rice baseball team heated up to split a pair of 7-inning Fall exhibition games, by the scores of 8-7 and 5-7, Thursday night on the road at Texas A&M.
No less than 11 different Owls combined for 18 hits over a combined total of 14 exhibition innings. Junior shortstop Trei Cruz was 4-for-5 with four RBI and two runs scored. True freshman Eric Benitez went 3-for-3 with a double while seeing defensive action as a catcher and later in the outfield. Senior third baseman Braden Comeaux again contributed to the offensive punch with a pair of hits, three runs scored and a stolen base. The Rice offense was on pace to turn of the heat even higher, but there were two exhibition innings that were halted due to pitchers reaching their pitch-maximum before the Owls were retired.
On the defensive side nine different Rice pitchers saw action. The Owls' staff combined for 11 strikeouts.
While Rice has concluded its two exhibition appearances, the offseason training program is scheduled to continue into early November. The second season under head coach Matt Bragga is set tio begin in February 2020 with a sensation three-game series against longtime rival Texas.
