The Lead: The Rice men's tennis team improved to 4-0 in 2019 with a 4-0 blanking of UTRGV on Sunday afternoon at the George R. Brown Tennis Center. Sunday's match was held in combination with the women's match vs. UTRGV, the first of two combined home duals for the squads, in addition to a combined road dual next weekend at LSU.
Doubles: Looking to make an early statement against a Vaqueros team that had stunned the Owls in the 2018 season opener, Rice quickly grabbed the doubles point by dropping only one combined game on courts two and three. The Owls are unbeaten in doubles this season.
Singles: Jacob Eskeland improved to 4-0 on the season and increased the Owls' lead to 2-0 by dropping just two games in two sets on court three. Sumit Sarkar added Rice's third point with a straight setter on court one and Daniel Warren provided the clinching point with a win on court six.
Next Up: The Rice men will have a quick turnaround, facing Western Michigan at 11 a.m. Monday morning. The Broncos, who are the defending MAC champions, are coming off a pair of tough losses on Saturday and Sunday to No. 9 Texas A&M and California in the ITA Kickoff Weekend at College Station.
