Men's T&F Garners USTFCCCA All-Academic Honors

Card-Childers, Filip, and Maher earn individual accolades
NEW ORLEANS – The Rice University men's track and field team was honored for its academic success on Thursday (July 26), as the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) named the Owls an All-Academic Team.
A team is required to maintain a 3.0 GPA or better to earn the distinction and the Owls met the criteria with a 3.30 GPA under head coach Jon Warren. In addition to the team award, the Owls had three individual honorees in Charlie Card-Childers (3.79 GPA), Scott Filip (3.72 GPA) and Erik Maher (3.89 GPA).
To qualify individually, the student-athlete must have a compiled GPA of 3.25 and have met at least one of the following academic standards:
*For the indoor season, a student-athlete must have finishes the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 48 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org.
*For the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships (including preliminary rounds).
Card-Childers, a native of Houston, was named to the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team for the third time in his career. A member of the C-USA All-Academic Team for a second straight season, Card-Childers earned a 3.79 GPA while majoring in Cognitive Sciences. Card-Childers earned C-USA All-Conference honors by placing third in the decathlon at the C-USA Championships and will be competing at this weekend's Thorpe Cup for USA in Knoxville, TN.
Filip, from Bloomingdale, Ill., earned his fourth selection on the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team after closing out his prestigious career with a 3.72 GPA while earning a Master's in Global Affairs. Filip placed fifth in the decathlon at the NCAA Outdoor Championships to earn First Team All-American honors for the third time in his career. In addition to winning his seventh career C-USA title (decathlon), Filip earned USTFCCCA Second Team Indoor All-American honors (heptathlon) and became the first athlete in C-USA history to win a fourth heptathlon title.
Maher, a native of Roseland, N.J., earned his third career USTFCCCA All-Academic accolade by posting a 3.83 GPA while majoring in Material of Arts in Education. He won his first career C-USA Outdoor javelin title and was also selected to the C-USA All-Academic Team.
