HOUSTON - Although the spring season is in the books for the Rice Owls men's track & field team, a handful of athletes are still shining bright in summer competition.
On the heels of a third place finish at the C-USA Outdoor Championships in the 10,000m, freshman Hociel Landa claimed the 10,000m title at the USATF Junior Championships at Hayes Track on the Indiana University campus.
Landa won the seven-man race on June 16 with a time of 31:22, defeating the next closest runner by nearly 45 seconds, becoming a USA National Junior Champion. One day later, Landa earned a bronze medal by placing third in the 3000m steeplechase in 9:36.97.
Landa's fellow freshman teammate Alex Topini was also in competition on Sunday, placing eighth in the 1500m (3:53.92).
In addition to Landa and Topini, junior Charlie Card-Childers will be in action later this week when he competes in the decathlon at the USA Championships, June 21-22 in Des Moines, Iowa.
Graduate Scott Filip will also be back at the Pan American Cup Decathlon in Ottawa, Canda, July 4-5.
