Haet Closes Out Win Over Bulls
4/8/2018 12:00:00 AM | Women's Tennis
Michaela Haet shook off a 6-1 loss in her second set to win the final match of the day and give the Rice women's tennis team a hard-fought 4-3 win over USF in Tampa on Sunday.
The Bulls took the early lead by capturing the doubles point, but the Owls struck back to take four of six first sets in singles. Five of the six singels matches were completed in straight sets and the Owls briefly took a 3-2 lead when Savannah Durkin closed out a 7-5, 6-4 win on court five.
USF tied the match with a win on court two while Haet's match moved to a third set to decide the outcome.
The freshman from Sydney, Australia closed things out with a 6-4 win in the third set, winning for third time in her last four matches to give the Owls a split of their weekend trip to Florida and allowing them to improve to 12-7 on the season.
"Today was a total team effort," Rice head coach Elizabeth Schmidt said. "We didn't play a very good doubles point at #1 and #3 but what the whole team did a really nice job of was being resilient and tough in the singles and stepping up to the challenge ahead of them. I'm proud of the team for pulling out this hard fought victory.'
The Owls will close out the 2018 dual schedule next Saturday when they celebrate the careers of their three seniors (Durkin, Lindsey Hodge and Wendy Zhang) when they host Louisiana Tech at 11 a.m.
