Sam Houston Defeats Rice Tuesday, 14-9

HOUSTON – The Rice baseball team scored nine runs on a season-high 18 hits, including a season-high five doubles, but visiting Sam Houston State rallied past the Owls in the ninth inning for a 14-9 win over the Owls Tuesday evening at Reckling Park.
Both offenses came out swinging in the slugfest. Sam Houston scored in both of the first two frames to take a 3-1 lead but Rice chipped away move in front, 4-3, on the strength of a two-run homer by true freshman Justin Collins.
Rice added another run in the fifth to stretch the margin to 5-3, but the Bearkats responded with back-to-back solo home runs in the sixth to tie the game. The Owls answered with three in the sixth on doubles by Ryan Chandler and Trei Cruz to move in front 8-5, but neither offense was still quite finished.
Sam Houston tied the score with three in the eighth, 8-8. Rice rallied to take a 9-8 lead in the bottom of the inning. The Breakats exploded for six runs in the ninth and a 14-9 final.
Every Owl in the lineup had at least one hit. The duo of Chandler and Ford Proctor led all players with four hits and combined for four runs scored Cruz finished with four RBI on three hits, including a pir of doubles.
Rice is now 12-19 on the season. Sam Houston State improved to 21-7 overall.
The Owls' current homestand continues thru Sunday (April 8). Rice hosts Conference USA foe Old Dominion in a three-game weekend series beginning on Friday (April 6). First pitch against the Monarchs is set for 6:30 pm at Reckling Park.
