FAU Takes Friday Slugfest, 14-10

NEW SATURDAY START TIME SET FOR 1 PM
HOUSTON -- No. 25 ranked Florida Atlantic rallied for eight late runs to claim a 14-10 Conference USA win over the Rice baseball team in the opening game of a three-game weekend series Friday night at Reckling Park.
Rice batted around for a big six-run second inning to take a 6-2 lead. FAU chipped away for runs in the top of the third, fourth and fifth to tie the game 6-6, but the Blue & Gray answered with a three-run fifth on the strength of a RBI double by Justin Collins and triple to the gap in right-center by Ryan Chandler for a 9-6 advantage. In the seventh Trei Cruz singled-home Bradely Geniting to extend the margin to four, 10-6. FAU continued to fight and rallied for five runs in the top of the eighth to take the lead (11-10) before three more in the ninth and a 14-10 final.
Rice finished the night with 14 hits including five for extra bases. Five different Rice Owls collected two or more hits in the game. The team is now 16-22-1 on the season and 6-9-1 in C-USA games. FAU improved to 28-9 overall and 12-4 in conference to remain atop of the league standings.
The C-USA weekend series continues through Sunday. Saturday's first pitch is set for new 1 pm start time. Sunday's series finale is set for 1 pm at Reckling Park.
