Eric Rutledge and Sumit Sarkar won a tiebreaker to clinch the doubles then provided the clinching points with wins in singles to lead the Rice men's tennis team to 4-1 win over host UTSA in the final round of the 2018 C-USA Showdown at the McFarlin Tennis Center on Saturday.
After the Owls and Roadrunners split the first two doubles matches, Rutledge and Sarkar battled UTSA's Gabriel Bugiga and Juri Reckow evenly through 12 games before taking the tiebreaker 7-3 and give the Owls a 1-0 lead.
After UTSA tied the match with a win on court six, Mohamed Abdel-Aziz gave Rice the lead for good with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Reckow on court three, setting the stage for Sarkar and Rutledge to close out the match.
The Owls, who won for the third time in their last four matches and as well as improving to 2-2 in conference play, will stay on the road next weekend with a doubleheader next Saturday against Tulane and New Orleans. They wrap up the regular season schedule on April 15 when they host SMU at the George R. Brown Tennis Center.
