Rice jumped out early as Trei Cruz hammered his second home run of the season over the left field wall in the first inning.
However, the Bulldogs came alive with five runs in the second on just two hits. Rice starter Zach Esquivel walked the leadoff hitter and then hit Gunner Schubert. After a fly out and a wild pitch, Esquival walked Nick Nyquist to load the bases with one out.
Daniel Frederickson then reached on a fielder's choice, tying the game. After Carson Breshears drew the third walk of the inning, Ernie Yake singled up the middle, scoring two and ending Esquivel's day after just an inning and two thirds.
Nick Silber came in and immediately gave up a two-run double before getting Jake Vieth to end the inning on a ground out.
Gonzaga added runs in the fourth, sixth, seventh and ninth innings. Rice got one back in the bottom of the ninth.
Braden Comeaux led the Owls at the plate, going four-for-five with an RBI, extending his hitting streak to 12 games.
Rice returns to the field this Tuesday, Mar. 13, when it hosts seventh-ranked TCU at 6:30 p.m.
