Astete and Haet Spark Owls Past UTA

Fernanda Astete and Michaela Haet stormed back from an early deficit in a tiebreaker to capture the doubles point then added straight set wins in singles to spark the Rice women's tennis team to a 5-2 over Texas-Arlington on Friday.
After the Owls and Mavericks traded wins on courts one and three, the first point of the day came down to a tiebreaker on court two. Astete and Haet trailed early 4-1 and fought off a match point at 6-5 to win the 9-7.
"UTA always plays tough doubles and we were a little up and down but our team stuck in and found a way to get the W," Rice head coach Elizabeth Schmidt said. "Then, we carried the momentum well into the singles."
Astete and Haet carried their momentum into singles, swiftly increasing the Owls lead to 3-0 with straight set wins. Astete did not drop a game in defeating Nanaka Takeuchi, while Haet dispatched of Anna Wichert, 6-2, 6-2.
Savannah Durkin provided the cinching point with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Klara Mrcela and Lindsey Hodge added the Owls final point with a 6-1, 6-3 win Momoka Horiguchi.
Rice wraps up its brief trip to the Dallas-Fort Worth area on Saturday when the Owls face TCU at 1 p.m. The two teams last met in the first round of the 2017 NCAA Championship, with the Horned Frogs taking a 4-0 decision.
